Heaven’s Gate

Tianmin Mountain, Zhangziazie, Hunan, China – July 2021

The journey to the summit of Tianmin mountain (1519 m/4982 ft) begins with an amazing cable car ride that starts inside the city of Zhangziazie. With a length of over 4.6 miles it is an experience in itself.

The top of the mountain is often shrouded in clouds and we were a little concerned that the views would be blocked when we got there.

We found the clouds came and went and it was amazing how they could form and burn off in a matter of moments.

Paths circle the entire mountain and we spent the whole day walking them and enjoying stunning views on all sides.

The walks include several glass paths.

From one side of the mountain you can see Tongtian Avenue – the 99 Curve Road. The number 9 is considered lucky in many Chinese cultures and 99 is luckier still.

After several hours of walking around the top of Tianmin Mountain we took the worlds longest escalator down to Heavens Gate, a natural cave in the mountain that opens on both sides. It is the highest elevated cave of its kind in the world.

From the floor of the cave you can travel down 999 stairs which at points become rather steep. Just go slow, hold the handrail and going down is better than going up.

Upon descending the steps you are still high in the mountains. Another cable car and and a bus ride will return you to the city.

If you don’t mind heights and appreciate a great view this is a fabulous way to spend a day.

Note: There are lots of snack, drink, and souvenir vendors at rest points around the mountain so it is unnecessary to bring much with you.
