Uphill Both Ways

Cinque Terra July 2018

One of our favorite days in the Cinque Terre was spent hiking from Manarola to Corniglia.

All of the villages are connected by walking trails, however, some of them had been washed out by landslides and were closed.  The coastal path between Manarola and Corniglia was one of the damaged trails but we were able to take an upper path.  The hiking here is stunning and we wish we had had more time to explore other trails.

We took the route shown in blue. The trail climbs from Manarola to Volastra then follows the ridges and eventually descends to Corniglia. It is about 3 miles…uphill…both ways.

From Manarola, you immediately start climbing…

At the top of the first mountain, you will find the village of Volestra.  This is a good place to refill your water and get a slice of watermelon.

Looking out over where we had been. Seems like 3 miles might have been a bit conservative.

While this hike was strenuous at points it was worth every step. The peacefulness, the views, and the nature just can’t be beaten.
