The Cinque Terre is a string of 5 seaside villages on the northwest coast of Italy. This part of the Liguria region includes rugged terrain, colorful villages and terraced hillsides. The best way to get to and around the area is by train. Between mid-March and early November, the Cinque Terre Express runs about every 20 minutes between Levanto and La Spezia with stops at the 5 villages in between.
Riomaggiore
The most southern of the villages is Riomaggiore.

Manarola
We stayed in this village for 5 nights during our visit.

Corniglia
Corniglia, an ancient Roman village, is the only one that does not have sea access.

Vernazza
This picturesque village includes a mid-evil castle, Belforte, built in the mid 1500’s to guard against pirates.

Monterosso
This is the largest of the Cinque Terre villages (about 1500 people) and has the most beach and coastline. It is split into two parts new and old.
