Murano and Burano, Italy
Located in the Venetian Lagoon, Murano and Burano are both groups of islands linked by bridges.

Murano is about a mile (1.5 km) north of Venice.

In 1291, the city of Venice was concerned about the risk of fire and ordered the glass makers to move to Murano.

We spent the morning in Murano which was lovely and then it was on to Burano.

Burano is about 3 miles further north and it is known for its lacework. It also has its own ‘leaning tower’ which you can see in the picture above (and below).

My favorite thing about Burano is the colorful houses.

All the doorways have color coordinated curtains so that residents can leave their doors open and still avoid noisy tourists.

There are several ferry/boat options to get around the islands. We took the hop-on hop-off boat.
