The Ridiculous Tour: Rome- July 9, 2018

Sant’ Agnese in Agone Church and the Fountain of the four rivers.

This Bernini fountain is considered on of his masterpieces. It was built between 1647 and 1651. It represents the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube, and Rio della Plata.

In 86 AD this was the site of a stadium (Stadio di Domiziano) built by Dominitian. It was used mainly for athletic purposes and could seat 30,000 people. In the 15th century the stadium was paved over and the Piazza Navona took its place.
Below: The Fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno) is at the northern end of the piazza and was designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1574. The fountain however was not completed until 1878.

Below: Fontana del Moro located at the southern end of the piazza. The tritons were sculpted by Giacomo della Porta in 1575 and the Moor in the center was added by Bernini in 1673.

Along the edges of the piazza are many cafes and shops. Another great spot for a drink or gelato on a hot day.
