Construction of the ‘Garden of Happiness’ began in 1559 during the Ming dynasty but was then delayed until 1577. Located in the Old City of Shanghai, next to the City God Temple, Yu Garden is full of winding paths and beautiful buildings.

The gardens were built by Pan Yundaun for his father Pan En.

Parts of the gardens were damaged and destroyed over the years by war and invaders.
